Hey there. This is my first time setting up my own Joomla website. Any help is apprieciated!
My Questions are:
- How do you actually buy a Template. I know theres plenty of sites selling them, but how does it work. Can I just do a one off payment and then download the Template to host via FTP?
- How much can you alter a template? Like this for example: http://joomla.siteground.com/index.php?mos_change_template=siteground58
Could I make ‘Easy customization’ and ‘Free themes’ appear in the one column so all the news is visable without it being cut off.
Could I change the Green font and lines to a different color?
Could I add a subnavigation? So when I hover/click something in the top right navigation, there is pages WITHIN those pages. So if you had multimedia, you could have Music and Videos as pages within.
Sorry for all the ‘could i’, but basically I want to know how much I can alter and customise the templates.
- Thanks, any other useful bits of information are welcome
You can alter VERY much of the Joomla Template. The best way to learn how to do all this is to get a PAID membership at either one of these 2 template sites - www.joomlart.com or www.rockettheme.com
Both these sites have a VERY VERY live and strong userbase. The community there will be happy to help do simple things like changing the logo, colors, or re-sizing and adding boxes and stuff. Don’t bother with the free stuff. Stick to either one of those 2 sites and get tons of free help from the forums. That’s the best place for a joomla newb to start.

I have used a WYSIWYG web builder with a free Brinkster acct(VERY AWESOME FREE HOST) but now i got a acct w/ Dreamhost and i want to put up a business selling Western wear and other Cowboy gear, Saddles, tack, art, etc.I have messed around on W3 schools website learning HTML for awhile now. I even downloaded a editor Bluefish that seems to be kind of nice. And i use firefox so i grabbed an ext. called ftp that i’m thinking will work perfect, if not please tell me so. Also I want to know how easy it will be to go back and little by little swap the Joomla Template w/ my own pages as i learn more. But there is a high importance on getting the site up right away. So am i correct in thinking that perhaps it should help me in that area, OR NOT ? Will it be anything like using the web builder im already familiar with ? My problem has been SEO trouble because of lack of control but joomla isnt like that so i should be alright, but then whats the downside to it ? What about ads ?
joomla and other content management systems can provide you with a great amount of functionality that would take quite some time to replicate in web pages on your own. (even with a wysiwyg editor) With Joomla, you can concentrate more on getting your site functionality in line rather than fiddling with the minutia of building the site.
Personally, i prefer to build sites from the ground up, but the lack of time in your case prompts me to suggest otherwise.
I asked a question earlier about how to embed video into a Joomla Template.
I asked for an answer in plain english about how to install.
I got an answer to download and install RPM. Where do I get it and HOW do I install it?
For some unknown reason people assume too much. I would like EXPLICIT instructions from someone on how to do this.
Thanks, I wait with baited breath
My friend, you should be more specific in what you ask.
What exactly do you mean by "embed" the video into the template?
Is the video of the kind from youTube, or some other kind, i.e. an avi file stored on your server?
I don’t really know what you are asking.
The only thing that comes to my mind that might be what you want is the special mod that you can download from joomla site, that allows you to post youTube and other videos on your site, and they appear embeded into the page.
A little forum browsing on joomla forums should do the trick - which is where you should have gone in the first place - yahoo is a Nono for such questions.
Hello ladies and gents!!
How do I go about creating menus that can be found on:
* http://www.midas.co.za/
and where can I download beautiful web templates (also Joomla and mambo templates)?
Also curious… what application do you use to edit you mambo templates?
Please assist ASAP.
You can find Joomla Template from internet everywher on internet, it’s so easy to find.
For your own custom template,
you’d better use a joomla template, edit with dreamweaver
edit index.php, and css files, so you can custom it as you like
For exercise, use XAMPP, try for localhost, after you love entire content upload it.

btw, the web you mention doesn’t use joomla, joomla use php mysql, that site use ASP.
but still, joomla is easy but powerfull
expand joomla with the plugins, so the web you develop will be beyond your own imagination for sure
I’m a joomla newbie. I’ve found a template with a great layout but the images are not to my liking. If I change the images and use it, will I be breaking any rule?
I change images all the time, you should just ensure you leave the link to them and you will be fine.. Joomla is open source!
check the licence you ticked when you downloaded it
I downloaded this SWEET template to my website which I’m running the CMS Joomla. Check out the template on my website: http://sowhatdesigns.com. Well I want to edit some of the main pictures such as the header that says "art color club" or whatever. Does anyone know how to edit pictures like that from Joomla?!
it is a bit tricky, you will have to open the zip file on your desktop and then find the file that you want to replace. Replace that file with what you want to use and make sure you give it the same name. Upload upload that file to your site using any FTP software when asked if you want to replace the file say yes. Thats it I do this all the time as a matter of fact it my next project!
I downloaded a template for Joomla, and when I unzip it, it remains four seperate files so I can“t download it to my webpage. How do I unzip it so it becomes one icon that I can upload it?
you dont have to unzip it.
1. Log in to your administrator backend of the site. The link to your administrator section should be like this: http://www.yoursite.com/administrator/ .
On the top, go to Site -> Template Manager -> Site Templates
1. Select New from the options.
2. Browse to your template’s zip file and select it.
3. Then select Upload File & Install.
When the template has uploaded and installed on your site, select continue.
Now, let’s publish the new template.
Select the radio button on the Left of the Template name and after that click Default from the Menu to set it as your default template.
That’s it! Your template is installed and ready for viewing.
I’ve been searching the web for free Joomla Templates but nothing comes to my liking. Anyone knows a good link for free joomla templates i can download?
Please support the poor. ^_^
