You ‘install’ the templates the same as any other component or plugin. You got to Extensions > Install and select your template file and upload it into your system.

Hey, can anyone help me do step by step of how to change the picture on the joomla! templates? I have downloaded some templates. Should I change it from the joomla file folder I put on the local server (I’m using WAMP), or change it from the template manager on the CSS part? How to change the ‘unwritable’ parameter to ‘writeable’ for joomla! 1.5?

Thank’s

To answer your question directly:
The template once in Joomla has to be either edited within Joomla or edited ‘offline’ and then reinstalled. Obviously the first is simpler.

So assuming you are logged in as the administrator to the Joomla backend, you can edit these files through the menu. However to directly change the Images I recommend that you have installed the extension joomlaXplorer to allow you to access files direcly within Joomla.

This is a file manager which gives better capabilities for file manipulation – like uploading a new image. Once installed locate the directory with the name of the template you wish to edit. This is situated in the ‘templates’ directory with your Joomla installation.

Now find the image you wish to replace in the ‘images’ folder. Use the upload button of joomlaXplorer to upload the new image and remember to select overwrite!

Also remember to check the html of the template incase the image size is hardcoded eg. width="200px" Again use joomlaXplorer as it can be easier if jumping around various files.

You have to have some knowledge of the Joomla! template system and php, because the templates are not just html and css they contain php and some of Joomla!’s template formating system short hand codes

I’m a new user of joomla. I have download some of joomla templates and try to use them. But I don’t know how to change its graphic, such change the background color, pictures, and so on. Is it possible to change them? Can I make social network community and e-commerce application using joomla? Thank’s a bunch! Cheers

Joomla is designed precisely for social network communities and e-commerce! Used ‘as is’ Joomla runs (without plugins) a community (ie multi user) magazine/blog-style website.

You then feed in the articles to read, items to sell, etc. You as administrator control who has access and who can create articles / items.

You can create and edit the templates as you wish and install plugins to enhance your site. They are just text files, editable with Notepad (Google "Notepad+" for an enhanced version, better for editing website files).

A great site for ‘empty’ basic templates is Compass Designs:
