I’ve seen you asking Joomla and CMS related questions for the better part of this month…I hope you’re getting somewhere in this adventure..

To answer your question, Virtuemart is an extension for Joomla. You will install Joomla first, then install Virtuemart into Joomla. The process isn’t all that difficult once you get Joomla installed.

I might suggest a couple of things to help you on your way, though..

First, find a host that supports Fantastico Auto Installs. This is a great way for a novice to get running quick and easy. You don’t need to worry about things like knowing your root directory and password, or your database name, or anything like that…it takes care of it all. BlueHost offers a Joomla auto-install, for example. It will get everything installed for Joomla, and you can start customizing and getting add-ons in place pretty easily (add-ons such as Virtuemart).

Second, when it comes to customizing Joomla, take advantage of the community. There are thousands upon thousands of free templates out there, and installing them is child’s play.

I’ve seen people suggest things like setting up a WAMP (i think I may have even suggested that) on your home machine for testing…I think you might have better luck if you get a host going, and play around there. That way, you don’t have to mess around with configurations and what not that are over your head.

I’ve done several installs Joomla sites myself, and they are pretty easy once you get the hang of it. If you find yourself stuck, you can message me here. I can’t promise that I’ll have an abundance of time, to help, but you seem to be going through a quite a bit to get this up and running, so I’ll do what I can if you need it.

I presume you mean the CMS ? http://www.joomla.com

Is it possible to "download" my joomla site (currently online, version 1.015) back to localhost, for migration to 1.5 purpose. as I do not want to do the migration "live" with the online site just incase something goes wrong, I prefer to do it locally and then upload all the site again. I tried installing joomla 1.015 in local host, downloading and importing the online database to wamp mysql, and then to copy and paste all the ftp content online in the www local host directory, but once I do that I can’t access joomla locally anymore, as there is a message saying that there is an error, is there a correct way to do this? thanks for your time, it is my first migration, and I want to do things correctly. thanks!

Yes, you can.

You haven’t mentioned what error you’re getting (yet), but here are some things to check:

- Make sure your development mysql user name, password, and database names match production (mosConfig_user, _password, and _db in configuration.php)

- Make sure the dev site is accessing the local mysql server (mosConfig_host)

- Make sure you’ve updated mosConfig_live_site URL to point to development and not production.

- Make sure your files are readable by the web server.

If it’s not one of those, please add specifics about the error you’re getting.

I have just downloaded Joomla Stand Alone Server (JSAS) but i havent seen or set the password for the administrator console within.
I wondered whether or not there is a default username/password for this, if so, what is it?

Thanks

The default username is "admin" and when you install Joomla you are prompted to supply a password and new username if you wish.

Hi, I want to practice so I can try to make a website. I have already downloaded WAMP. If I download Joomla and the virtumart cart can I practice this way or not?

Yup. Just make sure you install Joomla under the htdocs directory so it’s accessible to your server. You’ll need to also put together a MySQL connection, as that’s a vital part of setting up a CMS.

I want a page that supplies various galleries that is password protected for particular albums and will allow the person to download photos if they wanted to.

I don’t honestly know if there are any Joomla galleries with that feature already built in, but it would certainly be possible to adapt one that can automatically superimpose a watermark to have password-controlled access to a non-watermarked download.

You are welcome to contact me through the email link in my profile if you need additional help persuing this.

i use joomla 1.5 and i want my user download my pdf file but i don’t know how. i have search in the internet but i can’t find any qlue…please help e… :)

Best bet is to download the JCE Editor and install it. It has a icon for ‘Insert Link’. It looks like the ‘infinity’ sign and sholud be at the bottom left somewhere in the editor toolbar.
That will allow you to insert the link and also upload the document at the same time. The default Joomla editor allows you to insert links but you must type in the url.

Which one do i pick and run or what do i do with all the files i downloaded?

That needs to be run on a web server with PHP and MySQL

You can get a working web server at

http://wampserver.com/en/index.php

Download and run………you will see a WAMP directory……dump the files into
C:\wamp\www\joomla

You need to create the folder joomla

you can then access it at

http://localhost/joomla

Good luck…….Joomla is great!
If you are just starting, get V1.5

Channel theme: http://drupal.org/node/51335

Or! This is powerfull of drupal:
install any theme, install panels module, and you get 1,2,3,4,… count columned very flexible pages. For example, top is 1 column, under 2 column, middle is 4 column, last is 1 column, etc.

I’m trying to build a membership website and people have told me that Joomla works best. I have downloaded Joomla and don’t know what to do from there. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Does this cover PHP as well or do I need to download that?

1. You need decent web hosting that will support Joomla – See the installation requirements here: http://help.joomla.org/content/view/34/279/
Check out this article about Web hosting: http://www.bestaffiliateprogramguide.com/chooseandbuywebhosting.htm
2. You need to set up a MySQL database – make sure your host provides this
3. You need to upload Joomla to your server. If you upload to your root directory and then access your website – you will immediately be taken to the install page. You will be asked to give your MySQL database details, and then that’s it. Make sure you make a note of the admin password.
4. After installation you need to remove the installtion directory and then you’re live.
5. Check out Community Builder which is a Joomla extension that may give you what you want for your website. There are plenty of extra extensions you can download

Be warned though – Once you start adding extensions, they are supported by the Open Source community and many of them have issues and problems. The main Joomla 1.0.13 is stable, no issues with that, but a lot of the extensions I’ve tried have been "trying"!
