when I download it from their website a get a zip folder with lots of

The Joomla! web-based installer is part of the package you downloaded.
The package needs to be uploaded to your server space and you need to create a database with MySQL before you start installation.
Although these two articles were written for Mambo, the process is exactly the same.

Once those two things have been done you load up the URL to your Joomla files in your browser. The browser will automatically load the Joomla installer.
