Archive for Joomla CMS Download

I am Joomla newbie and I am a bit overwhelmed by the number of Joomla! components.
Is there some kind of universal Joomla build – already containing such pre-built components as Forum, Gallery etc.?

Typically, people add such components to their Joomla sites manually, e.g. FireBoard as forum, PhocaGallery as gallery etc.

Assuming you want to try some free components as a newbie and save some time, I would suggest that you use Joomla-Builder.Com service. They are said to offer a set of various selectable components into downloadable Joomla builds (on the fly).

Alternatively, if you plan to streamline your development, you can select a couple of components, install into your Joomla and save database+files to have a reliable build in your toolbox.

and what is the difference ? I need a cms for a dynamic ecomerce site

What should I use and do I get a ready made template that can be customized ??

And what kind CMS or Ecommerce tempalte?

Thanks :)

It deepends on your requirement. Apart from Joomla or WordPress you can also use Drupal or Xoops all this CMS comes with Ecommerce module. Like, Joomla comes with Virtuemart and Drupal comes with UberCart. I would suggest not to use WordPress for a ecommerce website, its being mainly used for Blog or artcles creation.

If you are talking about building a Dynamic Ecommerce website then there are few shopping cart open source application available like OScommerce or Magento or ZenCart with a robust backend content managemnet system.

You can get ready made well designed templates for all the above mentioned open source application from templatemonster.com website with a cost.

hi there
how can i make a small image show up when mouse over link on joomla cms ?
thanks

It depends if it’s an image on a content item, template or from a component?

More details needed, please contact me via my website.

Telll what you think. It would be important to me if you mentioned whether you’re a PC geek, or someone trying to market product and not necessarily a programmer..

Hi there,

I would like to start of by saying that I dont have an IT or programming background. I have however operated a number of websites over the last few years and have helped scores of friends with setting up their websites.

I have been involved with setting up Joomla for several ecommerce websites including a very large online travel website.

The benefits of using Joomla as your CMS are as follows:

- Open source so its a free product

- A CMS like Joomla is really easy to use especially if you there is a lot of content and pages.

- There are new Joomla products being developed constantly which can be integrated with the CMS. (not all of those are free of charge though) You can see a list of the Joomla extensions at: http://extensions.joomla.org/

- Easy and fast changes can be made to layout, design, website architecture etc.

Negative Items about Joomla:

- Website visitors can experience a rather slow loading website which can be due to a number of reasons including host.

– Many people complain that all the websites using open source CMS like Joomla all look the same and have the same feel.

- Many industry experts still consider cms systems like Joomla to be somewhat search engine unfriendly due to the dynamic nature of the system and the coding. A website build with a normal html builder such as dreamweaver (http://www.adobe.com/products/dreamweaver/) or Xsite Pro (http://xsitepro.com/) normally produces much better results in the SERPS in both the short and long run.

– Developement and support of a number of open source CMS systems have over the years suddenly stopped leaving website owners with no where to go when their system breaks down or changes are needed.

This has happened to CMS systems which at one time were very popular as Joomla is now. A commercial CMS system will allow for you to receive support fast and efficiently.

Good luck with making the right choice and don’t forget to visit the open source csm website where they offer test versions of all major open source cms systems. You can find the site at: http://www.opensourcecms.com/

Right now i am doing seo for an online university site and we planned to implement joomla content managrement system . I want to know implementing joomla will affect search engine optimization. To be more clear can we follow normal search engine optimization techniques if we implement joomla or is there any techniques available to do seo for joomla website .

You are talking about CMS premade web site systems. These templates are not made for SEO optimization friendliness. They often use a database factor and paramenters that do not do well with rankings, though they can be indexed. They do not offer proper page names, meta tags and so much more. I have had many clients with CMS sites who had many issues and problems as far as ranking, and we developed secondary informational web sites and blogs to help draw traffic.

CMS are wonderful sites for huge ecommerce, but again, there are major issues on the seo side.

Search engine optimization is not rocket science, but it is complex and it is an ongoing process that changes almost daily. There is no such thing as a permanent "fix" to magically send you to the top of the rankings for good. But here are some of the basics to look for when optimizing your site for the first time. There are some real simple things you can ask if they provided. FTp access to web site, not control panel, naming html pages with keywords, static html pages, use of xml sitemaps in root directory, use of h tags, different title and description tags for all pages, static text links, embedded text links and so on.

The Basics of Search Engine Optimization

The fundamental concepts behind Search Engine Optimization (SEO) are understood by most search engine marketers, but those new to the subject should find this article to be very useful. Informative articles on various aspects of SEO have been published here on MarketPosition.com over the years, and in this post I will summarize these concepts and provide links to relevant articles.

Keyword Research
The first step in SEO is to identify the search terms for which you would like your web site to rank well on search engines. We might believe that we know these terms already, but our intuition is often incorrect about how popular or competitive search keywords actually are in reality. People use all kinds of variations of phrases as they are searching for information on the internet. It’s important to identify these terms and use them in your site content exactly as people type them into search engines. To discover what these search terms are, a keyword research tool should be used. There are several free tools available, but most of the robust keyword research tools are subscription based.

Web Site Optimization
You now have your well researched keyword list in hand, and are ready to use the keywords in your web site content. How should these search terms be integrated into your web pages? How often should the phrases be used, and in what sections of the pages? Those are excellent questions and the answers are not known exactly because they depend on the algorithms used by search engines. However, it is generally agreed upon that search engines look at several different sections of a page when evaluating its content:

Title tag
Heading tag
Meta Keyword and Meta Description tags
Text within the Body area
Link text and Link URL
ALT attribute for Image tags (the ALT tag may be less significant than other areas of the page)

Search engines look at the various sections of the document for repeating patterns of keywords or phrases. For this reason, it’s important to have a keyword density within a specific range.

Web Site Design
Aesthetics and user friendliness are important elements of web site design, but there are a number of other things to consider to ensure a web site will be as friendly to search engines as possible.

HTML Validation
It’s important to ensure that the HTML code that makes up a web page is correctly formatted. If there are errors in the code, then search engine spiders may have difficulty indexing the page’s content. Use a HTML Validator to check the formatting of HTML code,

Site Map
It’s always a good idea to create a site map to make it easy for search engine spiders to index the site’s content. Link to every page on the web site that has relevant content, and place a link to the site map on the site’s home page. It may also help to sign up for the Google Sitemaps program to help ensure your content is indexed by Google.

Develop a Site Theme
One aspect of web site design that is often overlooked is theme development. If possible, organize your content so that particular themes are reinforced. Read Reinforcing Ideas and Improving Relevance to Gain Better Rankings for ideas to consider when organizing your site content.

Avoid Duplicate Content
It’s important to avoid duplicating content on the web site.

Comply with Search Engines’ Terms of Service
There are several practices to avoid to stay on good terms with search engines. Techniques like cloaking, hidden text, or spamming, for example, violate search engines’ terms of service. If a site is found to be using these types of blackhat techniques, it will typically be removed from the search engine’s index.

Build Link Popularity
The Link Popularity of a page is a term that refers to the number of other web sites that link to that page. Search engines typically consider how many other sites link to a page as a factor in determining that page’s ranking. The idea behind this is that if others link to a page, then they must consider that page’s content to be valuable in some way. However, all links are not weighted equally and it’s therefore important to try to encourage high quality web sites within your own theme area to link to your site.

Monitor Performance
Once your optimized web site is online, you’ll want to monitor its performance on the search engines. If the site is brand new, it should of course be submitted to the search engines, or perhaps resubmitted if necessary. Monitor the site’s positions on search engines for keywords of interest to identify areas where the site is performing well and areas that can be improved.

A web site that is positioned well in search engines should start receiving a significant number of visitors. To monitor traffic and other useful web site statistics, a web analytics solution such as WebTrends is recommended.

Conclusion
The art of SEO is a set of skills that can be learned and implemented by anybody who manages a web site. However, proper optimization and maintenance of the site requires time and effort, and the fundamental elements of SEO discussed above must be put into practice. Those who find they do not have the time or desire to implement their own SEO program, then hire an SEO Expert who incorporates all of the steps above.

whats the best cms to use when it comes to SEO, and user friendly addons (i don’t know if its the right term. eg module and plugin of joomla).

The best CMS for SEO, for the average user, is Joomla. Out of the box, just like all other dynamic webapps such as WordPress and Drupal, it’s poor. But all these things are fixed with plugins in the world of CMS, so the one with the most and/or the best plugins wins out. That’s Joomla, it has nearly 4,000 plugins right now.

All the apps you quoted are good for SEO, when managed correctly. If you don’t install the right plugins in the right way, they will all be poor. Get good advice or you may not get the best results.

In any case – you may not be asking the right question. Since they are all OK for SEO, you should maybe be asking "Which is best for my particular job?". Here’s a quick breakdown of the pros and cons:

WordPress: not a true CMS (it’s too limited), it belongs to a class of blog /CMS crossover apps that could be called Micro CMS. It’s absolutely the best choice if you want to get online fast and easy. It is best when you will be creating articles that are done and dusted quickly – finished with after a week or so, and not updated. So news and commentary – ie blog-type material – is the best fit. Also if you want people to comment on your articles, so you can establish a conversation.

Movable Type is the next one up, in this class. It’s more capable than WP because it’s bigger. It is closer to being a real CMS.

Joomla is a true CMS, and in the rich media publishing tool class. In fact it is the king of multimedia publishing. With 4,000 plugins you can do anything. But it’s definitely not a large enterprise CMS. Use the Joomla 1.0.15 version, don’t use the new 1.5 series – too many problems and not enough plugins – basically still in beta+. A CMS like this is used when you have different types of content (eg Flash slideshows, text articles, module items, image galleries, music clips) – and when the articles you write will stay current and be updated. Editing and organisation is far better in a true CMS like this.

Drupal is a good choice if you need ACL, access control for different editor groups. If you have various people who own different sections, this is the one. It’s much harder to use than Joomla though – which itself is much harder to use than WordPress. Drupal’s the one if you have many content owners.

So if I were you I’d work out what job you need to do first. All these are good for SEO but Joomla is the best. I work on SEO for these webapps every day so this is my game, I’m not repeating hearsay.
