Download Joomla Templates

Well I am new to this type of stuff so if I used the wording wrong I apologize in advance. I have a created website already on GoDaddy (its functions and everything domain name and whatnot) and would like to edit that site using Joomla if that is possible. I have been using Dreamweaver but discovered I can do more things using Joomla with their extensions. If that is possible then how would I be able to do that without having to pay some extra charge that GoDaddy seems to want to charge me. I downloaded Apache and went through the whole unzipping Joomla to a file on my computer but started to get confused because I couldn’t log in as admin on Joomla and I did not want to start a brand new website with new templates so I uninstalled everything. So what do I do? Hope this is not too confusing. Thanks in advance!

I want to develop a web site with a series of downloadable PDF documents, with the list of PDFs growing by time. Right now its small, like 20 documents but more and more documents will be added. The web site contains pages showing the thumbnail and description of the documents, and links for user to download. Do I need content management system for this so I can just keep adding documents/contents in the future without messing with the website?

I need something I can learn quickly, and simple to use.

I want to use my own design/template.

Anyone have experience with Joomla? is that a good one? Wordpress? Or does building SQL database from the ground worthed?

Joomla would certainly work, but it’s harder to learn then some. If you want something easy, go with CMS Made Simple -it really is simple. It’s a lot easier to work with for design also.

I wouldn’t deal with building the database from the ground up, it’s a lot of work and it doesn’t sound like you have anything any where near complicated enough to warrant that.

The pre-built CMS systems available are a great tool, I would always recommend using them.

I’ve looked at so many, my brain is spinning. ModX, Expression Engine, Textpattern, Joomla, Drupal… too many to choose from. Basically as many things that are important to me that i can think of right now are listed here: (or a start anyway)

Ability to do it from my mac. I think most are mac compatible, but just in case. (i think dot net nuke isn’t?)

ABILITY TO USE OUR OWN TEMPLATES - I don’t want/ need to choose from any pre-existing templates. We build sites professionally using HTML and CSS — just looking for a CMS that’s easy to implement/use with our own html designs/templates.

MAKES SENSE - Stuff’s easy to organize, makes logical sense on how things are arranged — i don’t want to have to spend a whole month just finding things.

ABILITY TO HAVE SECONDARY PAGES/NAVIGATION — and sometimes even a third "level" of pages. Hierachical levels.

ABILITY TO ADD FUNCTIONALITY (via modules, or whatever) for things like: events, news items, staff members, graphical calendar, site search, members-only part of site (is this possible? user management?), admin control (multiple admins with various admin capability), photo galleries, blogs (?), "store", .. etc.

Just looking for something that’s worth putting the effort, time, and energy into learning — something that’s customizable enough that it will work for plenty of sites, rather than finding out that it’s missing some core feature that we need for one, or whatever.

I’m pretty proficient in HTML and CSS. Just haven’t gotten a handle on this CMS stuff yet. We currently work with a programmer that does custom php solutions for us for most projects — just to give you an idea of where i’m coming from/what i’m familiar with.

anyway… thoughts anyone? advice? anything i should know? pointers? tips?

Is this easy? I am not a programmer. Do I use PHP/ MySQL? Ruby on Rails? What about Joomla or something like that? Is a site with submitted user reviews called a "CMS"? Is there a template or simple program where most of the programming is done for me? Should I just pay a pro to do this for me? How much might it cost? Thanks in advance!!

I am looking for a *fairly* basic CMS to use for my website. I am fluent in HTML and CSS, but only a beginner at server-side programming languages. Therefore, I’m not looking for anything overly complicated.

My requirements are:

*Must be easy to create a template for - (I have a lot of HTML / CSS designs that I would just like to make a couple of edits too to make compatible)
*Must be free or open-source
*Must have a built-in upload function (mostly for article images)
*Must have the ability to update top and side navigation bars easily.

Of course, CMS solutions like Joomla! and Drupal can do all of this, but they are too bloated for what I need, and my client is not tech-savvy at all. I need something *fairly* easy to set up, and very easy for the end-user. Any suggestions would be looked into, and appreciated!

Some say CMS Made Simple is the best and simple… others say that Joomla is the best, others say that all Joomla sites look the same with so many modules and such.

I have no idea which one to use. I would like to avoid using dreamweaver. I found a few templates I like with Joomla.

We have a small organization, with a ever so growing website.

Any advice???
Let me explain some more:

We already have a HTML website (made with dreamweaver by a friend of ours). I do not have dreamweaver any more and hear CMS is that much better.

I will be developing the new site, and updating it. I know some and I am learning… I will be taking a College course on it soon.
Well, as far as documentation and forum community support, I would give Joomla the thumbs up.

And there are lots of people who made videos on it.

As a developer I prefer to use Wordpress as a CMS, and have had really good results using it for most projects, it’s very well documented and easy to write custom plugins for. I didn’t enjoy CMSMS at all, I dislike Drupal and have heard other say the same. Expression Engine has good potential but it is not free for commercial use. Joomla is probably a good bet; you don’t have to install every plugin that Tom and Dick did.

It is a question that is difficult to really answer without knowing more about what the website is going to be like, and who is going to maintain it. Each of them has a particular talent that makes them more suitable for different applications. Plugins and good documentation generally make any CMS easier to deal with, so make sure that you’re comfortable with the adoption rate of the CMS you choose, as more developers working with it are going to make information easier to get.

Do not use dreamweaver.
